Investment pieces are often talked about in terms of how much money each piece costs when really it has more to do with finding quality clothing that fits perfectly in both form and function. Investment pieces are timeless, versatile staples that remain constants in your wardrobe; they can be mixed and matched with everything you own to create diversity within your outfits.
The foundations of a joyful wardrobe is perfect lingerie; if your delicates are uncomfortable and ill-fitting it follows you won’t feel relaxed in the clothes you wear. Invest in finding lingerie that fits your body perfectly, provides support, and boosts your confidence. Well-fitting lingerie should be so comfortable you feel like you’re not wearing any at all. I've never found better lingerie than the Marks & Spencer's range, they offer a free fitting service that's friendly and not at all intrusive.
Investing in jewellery is a smart way of updating outfits and keeping your style fresh. By choosing jewellery pieces in minimal styles, you can completely transform an outfit and instantly elevate your style. A couple of pieces - a necklace and matching pair of earrings - is a classic investment for your wardrobe, enabling you to accessorise without overdoing it. Opting for sleek designs and minimal styles makes for versatile jewellery to be worn every day or to add a little something special to evening attire. My everyday favourites include a 14k Gold Semicircle Necklace and pair of 14k Gold Arc Earrings.
Modest Black Dress
The smart black dress solves that age-old quandary of “what should I wear?” for pretty much any situation. It’s the fuss-free, works for any occasion investment piece everyone should own (even if you’re not a typical dress-wearer.) Find a shape that complements your personal style and, as always, invest in a brand that uses high quality fabric. A smart black dress (or a black dress that can be “smartened up”) will make you feel put together with very little effort. I recommend the Olivia Dress by Only Child* it's made from super lightweight rayon twill, cut in a timeless style, and drapes beautifully.
Go for something medium weight and a wide collar, longline coat is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Throw it on over the top of a casual outfit and you’ll instantly look more put together and worn over an evening dress it adds a little extra sophistication to your style. While black is always the classic choice, opting for a lighter shade will contrast nicely against an all-black outfit. I own a double-breasted Blenheim Wide Revere Collar Coat* by Great Plains in a gorgeous light caramel shade. It's a transitional coat, warm yet fairly lightweight, and looks appropriate whether in formal or casual environments.
Invest in comfortable knitwear made from soft yet durable fabrics in monochrome colours that can be thrown over the top of your outfits when the weather gets a little nippy. Stock your wardrobe with an even mix of structured and slouchy styles so you have something to pull on over the top of dressy attire and others to wear when you’re lounging at home. My selection of knitwear is light on the ground, I have a smart Everlane Crew Sweatshirt* and casual Tough Luck Psychic Readings Jumper.
Heels are undeniably impractical and uncomfortable, invest in neutral flats instead. Much like lingerie, practical shoes are the cornerstone for an easy-to-wear, functional wardrobe; if your feet hurt you’re going to be miserable. Smart flats are a safe investment that work with any outfit and are kind to your feet. If you prefer something with a little extra height, go for classic boots with a simple design. I find a pair of Milan Birkenstock Sandals work for almost every outfit and Chelsea Boots are a comfortable compromise for smart occasions.
A total essential for any minimal wardrobe, investing in an all-occasion bag is a wise decision. Choose something that works for your lifestyle; whether you need a bag that’s a little roomy and oversized or a petite bag that only holds the essentials, invest in a design that will compliment your style and can be paired with everything you own. I switch between a TINCT Cross-Body Bag* and an Everlane Tote* both of which suit my needs and style perfectly.
