Falling into a routine can happen to any of us and investing in self-care is important yet can easily be overlooked. If you find yourself in a rut and things start to feel bad, here are three simple ways you can brighten your day.
Reclaim The Morning
Often our mornings are rushed; bleary-eyed we feel pushed for time as we try to get ready as quickly as possible in order to get to work on time. If this sounds all too familiar, break your routine and reclaim your morning. It might require getting up just a little bit earlier to do something you enjoy for the sake of enjoying it. If your schedule is flexible, indulge in breakfast in bed or arrange to meet with friends for brunch. If not, simply rise earlier to read a good book, listen to a podcast, or sit by the window and let the world go by for a few precious moments. A good start sets you up for the rest of the day; reclaiming your time, investing in what you value the most, can completely restructure how your day plays out.
Enjoy Simple Luxuries
Simple luxuries are little pleasures in life that bring us joy; a little something you can look forward to knowing it will make your day that little bit sweeter. It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, big investment, or even a lavish affair. Enjoying a little luxury could be as simple as wearing your favourite jewellery, lighting a beautifully scented candle, refreshing the bedsheets even if they don't need to be refreshed, or taking a moment out to meditate and relax. These little luxuries can really lift our mood; they're simple, easy to do, and make a huge difference to our day.
With everything going on in the world and all the noise online, it’s easy to allow what we hear and see to influence our emotions. Combating those negative and toxic emotions by doing things that empower and educate ourselves is a quick way to brighten our day, helping us to feel motivated, passionate, and uplifted. Opt out by signing off from social media, tuning out of news feeds and television, and choosing to listen instead to something empowering. Seek out positive news and educational information; make it a habit and your days will be infinitely better. My recommendations include: The Guilty Feminist, Radiolab, TED Radio Hour, and 99% Invisible.
